Combat level calculator Empty Combat level calculator

Recently I read the Jagex's announcement regarding the poll they added into the game. I wanted to see what the SM community thinks about it.

Personally I wouldn't like the old combat calculator to get implemented into the game for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, it will bring pures back which will make pking unfair towards non-pures. In the past (pre-EOC) I had given up pking for that reason, it was impossible for me to have a fair fight with someone else around my level in the wilderness, I prefer having balanced combat stats so I can enjoy all content (quests, etc) while everyone else had very high level in strength and very low in defense which allowed them to deal damage that was very high for their level. The new combat level calculator made impossible to trick the combat system in order to have a much lower combat level that you actually are. It allowed the average player to go and test his skills in pking with other players who more equal in terms of damage per second and thus it allowed them to have more fair fights. In EOC the tires of weapons are very important. I can guarantee that as an experienced EOC pker , a weapon 5 levels more than your opponent can mean that you have 80-90% chances of winning him.

Lets take for example player A and player B:
Player A combat stats:

Attack Level: 1
Strength Level: 1
Defence Level: 40
Constitution Level: 70
Prayer Level: 43
Ranged Level: 80
Magic Level: 1
Summoning Level: 1
Combat Level calculated with the old formula: 71

Combat level calculated with the new formula: 122

Player B combat stats:

Attack Level: 50
Strength Level: 50
Defence Level: 50
Constitution Level: 60
Prayer Level: 45
Ranged Level: 50
Magic Level: 50
Summoning Level: 50

Combat Level calculated with the old combat formula: 71

Combat level calculated with the new formula: 102

While player A can use royal crossbow player B can only use bows up to magic shortbow, player A can deal double the damage than player B. Especially if player A rushes player B, he will probably kill him before player B can react.

Mod pips posted an unofficial poll on ORSF asking what the players like about 138 combat formula with the following options:

Familiarity - You're used to how it worked and the old combat levels you saw around the game made instinctive sense.
If you are more familiar with the old formula, there's always the old school runescape for that, some people enjoy pking in EOC and I believe that it's not right to ruin the game for them while you can have what you want in old school.

Information - It revealed more about the capabilities of a potential opponent.
The 200 combat level calculator reveals much more accurately the combat capabilities of a potential opponent. The proof for that is on my example (with player A and B).

Nostalgia - You associate the '138' combat formula with fun times from the past and it brings you a feel-good vibe.
Isn't there the old school runescape for that reason? Why should we ruin the game for those who prefer EOC?

Prestige - High combat levels were not easy to reach and were a symbol of achievement.
Couldn't jagex implement a another way of players to show off that they have maxed all their combat stats? for example a title or a cape etc. In my opinion it is a bit arrogant to ruin the game for some people who like pking so that some high level players (which are unaffected by this change, as pures are of lower combat levels) can boast about their max combat.

Pures - It allowed for specialist character builds.

PS: by "pking" I don't mean only the wilderness, there are many minigames which include pvp.

I would love to see 138 combat back. 138 combat was achivement! Combat 200 is peace of cake, 99mage+99def and you have it. Lowest total level with cb 200 is 231!

Personally, I would love to see 126 make a return, though that's probably nostalgia talkin', always wanted to have 126 XD

I voted for 138 because it let me know how I was doing on my way to getting maxed. It also let me know how powerful other people were, someone with 99 def+99 magic, with 20 everthing else had the same power-meter as someone with 99 all skills, combat wise.

I also voted 138 mainly because reaching it has always been my goal.
I agree that current(200) formula shows more accurately the capability of another player in PvP. But I think it's the oppositre in PvM. Like Nex now is barely level 240, but it's obviously much much stronger than a level 200. Before it was combat 1001 which is way higher than 138.
Nice thread btw, enjoyed reading it so +rep.

I can't agree more with that, indeed the combat levels of NPCs are way more deceptive than before EOC though I doubt that they are set automatically. In order to determine the strength of an NPC I go and check his lifepoints instead of his combat level.

An example is the undead lumberjack whose combat level is 164 but his lifepoints are only 170 while a grotworm with combat level of 90 has more than 6k lifepoints

The old combat system will ruin many new skiller accounts, that got skills up that didn't add into the combat formula in eoc, but would in the old-new system (i.e. Prayer and Constitution). So for that reason, I may have to oppose it.

They did mention that some accounts would be allowed to request stat rollbacks, perhaps this would also go for skillers for the reason you mentioned.

OT - Voted 138 without question. 138 was an achievement and stood for something; 200 is weightless and doesn't mean anything. It's really that simple for me.

138 for life tbh.

Shows you've actually maxed everything for the most part combat wise.

Whereas 200 just shows you maxed like 2 stats.

I voted 138 mainly because back then, it actually meant something to be a maxed level. Pre-EoC I was 128, post Eoc I was like 182 with 96 attack and 99 strength, but only 78 defense, so I looked like a noob. In a way I'm happy that it was there to make me get 91 defense, which I'm still training, but I'm ready for it to be gone...
