author: [x]
Entry Deadline: May 19, 2014
FIRST PLACE and public favourite: DoYouPlay_RS - 62/80
- Inhaps' critique -32:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 8/10 - The flow suggest by the spatters does not match the one implied by the brightness.
Typography: 7/10 - It blends into the background too much, and it could be placed closer to the focal if the text is so dark.
Execution: 8/10
- Kelly's critique - 30:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 7.5/10, seems your flow is only definitive by the splatter brushes, not much else effect wise. To improve, adding some fractal effects or maybe a couple of C4Ds cuddled around (behind) your render going in the same flow-direction as the brushes would have defined it more Smile.
Typography: 6.5/10, unique try. I'd recommend moving it over a few ticks to the left (closer to the focal), and making it a little easier to read. Text is the hardest part of a tag because it can make or break it, sometimes.
Execution: 7/10, keep it up!
SECOND PLACE: Heppernaut - 58.5/80
- Inhaps' critique - 30:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 7/10 - The brightening overlay on the face makes it look somewhat dead. And the effect on the eyes should be more subtle as right now it is a bit toony, which causes a stylistic dissonance.
Typography: 7/10 - Black text over a white and dark grey background makes it a bit of an eyesore. It might've worked better on the opposite side.
Execution: 7/10
- Kelly's critique - 28.5:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 6.5/10, Can see you tried to make it look wintery, but the smokey brush effect over the focal's face doesn't look natural and overbearing.
Typography: 6/10, the black text over the white background is very hard on the eyes. It would have worked better either a little closer to the render (few slides over to the right), or on the opposite side.
Execution: 7/10, keep it up!
THIRD PLACE: GiovanniMoonen - 45.5/80
- Inhaps' critique - 24:
- Idea: 8/10
Technical: 6/10 - The perspective on the render and the background match perfectly. The contrast of the render is too high but the blur does work in providing a focal point.
Typography: 4/10
Execution: 6/10
- Kelly's critique - 21.5:
- Idea: 8/10
Technical: 5.5/10, the way the render is facing and the background work well, however the render just doesn't fit in a sense as with the theme. It looks really cold outside in your background, but your render is running in a short, sleeveless shirt. The contrast difference between the render and the background is also overly noticeable.
Typography: 3/10, too far from your focal so it's becoming it's own focal and doesn't fit or blend with the piece at all.
Execution: 5/10, keep it up! You're definitely improving, man.

A bit lacking, needs something more to tie her into the background. See how the original image has some fancy lines? Otherwise it would seem somewhat empty. It also needs text as per the rules.

The render loses a lot of its charm from being monochromatic, more so with such strong saturation.

Definitely looks better now; wasn't sure if you intended it to look whitewashed, so good job.

Thank you, I wanted to add a bit more shine to it but I'm a newb
You still can and should. In fact, you still need text if you want a better score. Google for tutorials on how to add flair to signatures if you cannot figure it out all on your own, which, to be fair, might be the case; it is difficult to create something if you do not fully understand the tools at your disposal.

This is an extremely drastic change in quality. Very nice work mate. If I may suggest adding a border and perhaps making your signature (lettering) more integrated.
Huge improvement though, +1 man

Per request to give some feedback, an improvement from your last entry, but the render itself (your focal) is quite large, but arguably alright. The "Giovanni" text doesn't work, it's very distracting and becoming a secondary focal (which you don't want), and is a color that isn't seen anywhere else in your piece. I agree with Heppernaut on a boarder, try a 1 pixel black boarder. Keep looking at tutorials and keep at it .

Hey Inhaps, do you mind using the fixed version of my entry rather than the one with the weird facial smoke?

Voted. I feel the best of them was DYPR's, but his didn't really have a "winter" season feel to it, and Gio's didn't either since the woman is sleeveless shirt and running in cold. But Hepper's fits the theme most, though. Good luck everyone .
Take care!
