Entry Deadline: July 14, 2014
FIRST PLACE and PUBLIC FAVOURITE: Ross L - 95/120 - 79.2%
- Inhaps' critique - 34:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 8/10
Typography: 8/10
Execution: 9/10
I greatly appreciate parts of it going out of bounds of the background. The shape of the background, however, does not align with the general flow, which is a bit conflicted in of itself with the hair going downwards while the particles go upwards. The brush strokes over the render appear to be quite minimal but very effective at obscuring the render just enough for eyes to focus on the top but not enough to lose much detail. As for the text, it fits in there snugly but it doesn't wholly match the vibe.

Typography: 5/10
Execution: 8/10
A good effort and a nice piece. Someone with unique ideas always interests me. Your unique view on the theme has scored highly in the fields of concept and overall feelings, despite the technicalities losing marks in places. Your chosen render provided its own light source and you didn't act on it, this contributed to a lack of depth, although your use of a borderless design helps to compensate that. There is noticeable flow in the piece but is conflicted in places where you have brushed in the "wind". The typography was aesthetically pleasing and kept in the theme, although its placement and style could have used more attention. Overall a very nice piece which fits the theme well!
- Kid's critique - 35:
- Idea: 10/10
Technical: 9/10
Typography: 8/10
Execution: 8/10
Comment: This is a really good piece although you could have maybe set the scene a but better.
SECOND PLACE: Mr Rockeye - 77/120 - 64.2%
- Inhaps' critique - 28:
- Idea: 8/10
Technical: 7/10 - The lighting is great but the flow is somewhat ambiguous. The water looks good but the sand does not look quite right; it shouldn't have such horizontal strokes nearer the waves as it would get smoothed away. The birds might just be a bit too large; they might fill up what would have been a fairly blank place but it does not help that much when they themselves look odd.
Typography: 6/10 - It does not look as much a part of the sand as it could and the outlines get somewhat blurred near the middle.
Execution: 7/10
- Stitch's critique - 21:
- Idea: 6/10
Technical: 4/10
Typography: 6/10
Execution: 5/10
I like the concept and the idea of what you were going for, although I feel that it could have been handled with more care and perhaps, given more time, you would have made an awesome piece out of this. Technicalities are an issue in places; the depth could have been improved by blurring the edges a bit more and possibly making the ship in the background smaller and blurred. I like the quality of the water and the depth is obvious between that and the sand. I enjoy the typography and its premise, although there are things that could have made it look even more realistic. The lighting is done well, the central focal makes it hard for one to produce a concept of flow however. Overall a solid entry.
- Kid's critique - 28:
- Idea: 6/10
Technical: 7/10
Typography: 8/10
Execution: 7/10
Comment: Really do like it, just the idea is a little too basic but over good.
THIRD PLACE: Leakee - 76/120 - 63.3%
- Inhaps' critique - 25:
- Idea: 8/10
Technical: 6/10
Typography: 5/10 - The D looks very much like a B due to the gradient and the nose of the boat being where it is. With the background image being blurred at the bottom, the text does not look right with solid contours.
Execution: 6/10
- Stitch's critique - 17:
- Idea: 5/10
Technical: 4/10
Typography: 3/10
Execution: 5/10
Firstly, I looked at this piece as an overall image and I will say that I wanted to score this higher than I did. The concept was nice but you couldn't avoid the more intricate criticisms. This piece only gained an aspect of depth when you erased the text to make the boat the focal. Doing this meant that the whole sig was swallowed by the text, making it difficult for you to get a balance of lighting and flow. There is minimal flow but I personally can make some out, others may not. I think the artist took a risk with the idea and it may not have paid off, behind the mask of the typography I see potential for a very nice, simplistic piece of artwork. Well done.

- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 8/10
Typography: 9/10
Execution: 8/10
Comment: Very unique signature, I really like how the text is part of the whole signature instead of a corner.
CDT - 59/120 - 49.2%
- Inhaps' critique - 15:
- Idea: 6/10
Technical: 3/10 - The focal point is off-centre but not enough to align with the position on an image eyes are naturally inclined to rest on.
Typography: 3/10 - It is hardly visible with the fading gradient.
Execution: 3/10
- Stitch's critique - 14:
- Idea: 4/10
Technical: 3/10
Typography: 4/10
Execution: 3/10
I feel that the concept of this piece had good intentions. However, the execution and technicalities of the signature are a bit disappointing. I like the colours of the piece and the lighting is existent, for which you get credit. On the other hand, the piece has little to no depth, other than the slight gradient fade on the text. The lighting is unique and I appreciate someone using lens flare over soft lights for a change, but unfortunately the lighting is contradictory to the flow set out by the stock. Smudging and manipulation of the clouds could have remedied that to an extent. Overall, I'm not sure much was done here to make it a singular entity, but I can see the effort and intentions behind its components. Well done, keep it up.
- Kid's critique - 30:
- Idea: 6/10
Technical: 8/10
Typography: 8/10
Execution: 8/10
Comment: Really go piece of art love the say the text is mixed win with the lighting coming from the sun.

Seaside... Alright, unusual. I'll see if I can put something together, unless you'd prefer I judge instead?

True I'll try to add a bit more water glitter and sun shine
Edit:
I played a bit arround with the color mixers to get a better realistic look, done some with the sun reflections and such. I think this one turned out quite a bit better

Much improved. It looked pretty bleak and lifeless before. Not very aesthetically pleasing but it had its mood. 1 thing I'd suggest is making the far-away ship and birds foggy since that is how objects tend to appear at a distance.

I cannot tell if it genuinely looks better or just feels different on my laptop screen. I am more inclined to believe the former.

Taken a break from rs for over a year, but i'm back, in full force! Watch this space!
EDIT:
Here you go! My entry!
The idea was to try and get a windy effect going with the idea of particles blowing 'out' of the sig, with the white brush strokes representing 'wind'? Kept the colours to blues and yellows for sand and seas and tried to use flowing c4ds to represent the swell of the waves!
P.S Bear in mind this is my first sig in well over a year so i'm VERY RUSTY, with that said... Constructive crit only... no outright bashing! Thanks ^_^
