[PASSED] The Internet Access Controversy [PASSED] Empty [PASSED] The Internet Access Controversy [PASSED]

This particular debate was posted elsewhere, but I am posing the question as well. It's a great debate in relation to our technological advances over the years.

Do all people need a phone, cable, and internet–meaning has it become a necessity of life as we know it?

The internet is the greatest invention of our age. It allows access to the near-sum of human knowledge, more than any one person could ever dream of going through in their lifetime. Every individual should have access to it, and many public libraries provide it free of charge which serves for the betterment of humanity's collective intelligence. Yet much of the internet traffic consists of funny cats and porn, which if you have ever spent a day on the internet appears to be fulfill the primary needs of most people. This very much proves that the internet is undoubtedly a necessity.

I would say no,
Simply because it is not a necessity by any means. My grandma has no internet access, phone, or anything. She pays all her taxes and such through mail, and she is perfectly fine. Obviously, internet makes everything in our lives 1000x easier, and sometimes more entertaining, but by no means is it a necessity.

Internet is actually becoming a necessity because a lot of the things we used to handle in person are getting converted to digital actions.

Anyway, I dont really see how this is a controversy?
Its just evolution of mankind. Nowadays we still need devices to connect to the internet, but in some time we wont need physical devices anymore and then its just as much part of our life as fire/heat is

The thing is you wouldnt actually do any of these things, which is why internet could be considered to not be a necessity.

A connection to the Internet has seemingly become a social necessity, but I don't believe by any means it's really something that we need to survive. Older generations of individuals have survived a lifetime just fine without the internet, smartphones, and other devices that have an Internet connection.

They're definitely a wonderful luxury to have, and we would miss them dearly if anything ever occurred to them. Their endless knowledge. If I wanted to know something, the likelihood of me finding it out in a reasonable time without the Internet is skeptical, but with it just a quick few words typed into Google.com and bam, most likely find something that harbors your query. Plus the spell check function, such a lovely thing…

So it's mostly social necessity VS survival necessity. Socially if you want to exist, yes you would probably need it, as the most convenient way to talk to people globally–from old high school friends, to your friend whose abroad for the summer–would be the Internet and social media places like Facebook. As far as survival goes, we would all most likely survive a day without it, just some of us might miss it more than others.
