How to Find Good Items to Flip

The question I get asked the most is what items should I flip? There is no right answer to this question. I can give you a few suggestions but in the long run it won't be any good. Items tend to change in price over time and so does their merchanting potential. Hopefully this guide can some answers to this question as best as possible and make the task of picking items easier for you. The main emphasis is on finding items to flip actively or inactively, however many aspects of this guide will help you find potential items to invest in too.

Before you read any further I would like to inform you that any item in the Grand Exchange can be flipped. Often the best items are the ones you don’t think about, this is because normally less merchants are flipping them resulting in less undercutters. Although you must understand that there are still many items that are flipped often and can make you a great profit too.

A common problem for many people is that they find really outdated lists from various websites. The chances are that many items on that list have changed prices and are usually quite useless. If you are looking for the best margins you will need to be looking at:

1) The unstable items
2) The expensive items
3) Items which are flipped rarely

Merchanting Logs

Merchanting logs contain flips uploaded by merchants who like showing their flips and progress to the community. When the flips are new (recently finished and added) they can give you great hints for potential items. A huge benefit is that you can see how much they have made from the item and the cost of the transaction, this gives you an idea about the item's merchanting potential.

Spoiler:

For an example I have posted my own log with items which were flipped around the 16th February 2014.
Spoiler:

At the moment of writing the guide price of a Bandos Godsword is 855k, meaning if you were to flip 9 it now the estimated cost would be 7,695,000. This may mean that at this time the margins may not be as good as they were then because the value of the godsword has dropped quite significantly. However, if I would have a small cash pile this item may still be a good item to flip. If possible try to use the most updated logs.

Merchanting related websites

Geupdater
http://geupdater.com/

Geupdater is a great website which contains tons of information of items via the use of graphs.
If you go to the tab named “Merchantable Items” you will see many good items which normally are very good to flip.

Spoiler:

Additionally you can go to “items”, then sort by price or popularity which can offer you good hints on what you could flip.
Spoiler:

Grand Exchange Central
www.grandexchangecentral.com/

This is a website similar to Geupdater. However it gives you a bit more freedom to search through items. I would suggest at looking at “Top Loser/Gainers by GP and Percent”. This is because a lot of these items may be unstable which would make them ideal for active flipping or low balling if they are falling. Additionally “Popular This Week” and “Popular All Time” can throw in some good suggestions for items as well. But all in all this website is very handy as it sorts many different items into different sub sections and contains ascending and descending lists due to their price movements or demand/supply.
Spoiler:

Merchz
http://merchz.com/

Merchz has great graphs and a useful STO indicator. Beware of it though, don't rely on it too much because it isn't perfect. Also if you go to "Merchz Logs" then to "Item High scores" you can find a number of really good items to flip.

The mentoring system
http://www.smokinelite.com/f73-mentors

The mentoring system in smokinelite is very unique. Top merchants are on hand on teaching mentees how to become a great merchant. This includes mentors teaching on how to go about finding good items to flip and they may also give a few suggestions to you themselves. The mentors will help you, and guide you whenever you ask for it. It's their responsibility to look after you, but it's also your responsibility to learn, listen to them closely. Don't be afraid of applying!

Official Runescape sources

This information normally relates to investing. However, items which are mentioned in the patch notes and behind the scenes, tend to start fluctuating a lot, making them unstable. This can be a perfect opportunity for flippers to merchant these items for big profits.

A good example where millions could have been made was when legacy was released. People were selling godswords for 5 times their normal price making them unsettled causing large margins. If you were lucky you might have made some crazy flips during that time for huge profits. This is a another extreme example demonstrating how useful it is to keep up to date with the latest updates and announcements.

In-game experience

Playing the game is a massive advantage to any merchant. Examples could be quest items you bump into which have a low supply but may sell for crazy prices due to people needing them to complete a quest. You can also see what other players are wearing and chatting about. Wealthy players often like to show off, therefore you can sometimes get ideas of some high end items you could flip. Additionally, you may see a lower leveled player in an iron platebody and use your runescape knowledge to remember that they are used for making iron titan pouches. You may be able to do an overnight flip as supply is low but demand is high resulting, in a good profit.

In conclusion

The beauty about flipping is that they are thousands of items in the Grand Exchange which can all be flipped. It is often the items in which you don't immediately think of that have the most potential to you flipping wise due to low awareness and competition. Also be aware that many of the high wealth items have low limits which require the need of friend chats or different methods of finding the margin as you cannot use the regular buy and sell method. They are a number of sources to your disposal as a merchant, the best merchants use these sources to their full potential and make millions. A bit of research here and there can be worthwhile.

Thanks to Phileep, Minato and Kelly for their input on helping me with this guide.

Another good site to look out for items. It also includes some really cool features that are unavailable on other sites.
