MarketWatch Stock Game
Got what it takes to beat fellow SM members in the Stock Market?
Hello there, I thought I would mention that me and a few others have been playing a virtual stock market game on MarketWatch (affiliate of Wallstreet Journal). I started off using it to just test my charts on www.sentdex.com, but it gets boring without other people playing as well, so it's open to the public.
The game is free to play, and is pretty much the best free stock market game, as it follows the actual prices pretty well, and mimics the trading environment well.
Link to game:
http://www.marketwatch.com/game/merchz/
Starting capital is 500K USD, you can borrow another 500K USD for a fee.
You are allowed to short stocks
You are not allowed to buy a large percent of a small company (since it would normally affect the price, but obviously wont in Market Watch)
You can set stop-loss and limits.
The downside is you do get what you pay for (free) and it does have lag some times, but otherwise it's quite good.
At the moment, we have a few people who play, but I would like more competition to make it a bit more enjoyable.
WTF is stop loss, limit, and selling short?:
Selling Short: Betting against the stock. You make money as it falls. It's just reverse investing, but carries more risk. You stand to lose an unlimited amount of money, as opposed to only losing a stocks value. Also, generally, markets rise over time. If you are a habitual shorter, you will lose money in the long run most likely.
Stop-Loss: A stop-loss is used to "stop your losses." If a stock is falling too much that you've bought, your stop loss can save you if you are not there at your computer to see it happen. Let's say you've invested in AAPL at $450 a share. AAPL is a fairly volatile stock, so you want to allow for some movement, so you might set a stop-loss @ 440, or 445. This means, if the stock falls below the stop loss, it will be sold. The theory behind stop loss is that you utilize support levels and resistance levels. The theory of those is that, if a stock passes the level, it will continue going in that direction until the next support or resistance level.
Limit: This is like what you do when you set an item for sell or buy in the GE. You are saying, I will purchase/sell this stock for THIS price. If you are buying, with a limit, it means you will buy for that price or lower. If you are selling with a limit, then you will sell for that price or higher. Shorting obviously flips this.
There is only one rule, and it will be enforced:
You may not join, go all in, get screwed, leave, and start over. I don't care if you want to be risky and go all in (called 'the Billyjoblo makinthefknbankson'), but you are not allowed to keep trying, leaving, and re-joining until you make it.
As long as you accept your losses and work to win (also called 'the Billyjoblo makinthefknbankson'), then come join .
If you do join, please post who you are so we know.
I know who most of the players are who are playing in my game, but I suspect they may not want me to post their names.

Try again, and make sure you are checking spam. Not sure what else.
The website gets overloaded sometimes, especially during popular trading times, so maybe that's why it never sent as well. Never give up!

Re: MarketWatch Stock Game
i finally join, my name is Mark Remington. Already gained $756 wooo
edit: this should be a competition between the fellow SM members. there should be a first second and third place winner at the end of every week or month. the pot would be should be 100m, with the first getting 50m and 2nd getting 30m while the 3rd gets 20m. would be interesting.

We could have a "pool" that required a buyin for competitions, but I'd rather not start and stop games every week. This one is ongoing and mostly just for fun.
We could track change in earnings week to week and have a bit of a spirited competition for those who wish to drop a wager, but I wouldn't want it to be a requirement.
If anyone else would be interested in something like that, I'd happily host it.

Re: MarketWatch Stock Game
I changed to a different platform on Tuesday, they gave me £50,000 to practice with. I just thought I would take this opportunity to point out that I am better than all of you combined:
Such a shame it's not real money. I would have made more in 4 days than a lot of people make in a year
