Idk if this is still a relevant method, but try defense casting blood barrages on the monsters inside the abyss.. I got 99 mage and I was almost at 99 def before I either ran out of money or quit, I forgot Its also not a bad source of charms so bring a charm impling and an inventory of overloads and afk the shit out of it.
