It was very intense indeed, but boring game.. urgh!
Either way, dutch coach was very brave switch keepers.. I was very surprised to see that! Lucky they made it :p
It's because Tim Krul was specifically chosen to study the Costa Rican players' kick preferences.. same thing happened for Germany in 2006. ALL of his dives were in the correct direction. I don't know if you caught this, but he was shouting something along the lines of "I know which way you're going to kick" at the players, while also being intimidating in general. Really, it's not that hard to imagine. Shouldn't be too hard to access recordings of penalties in international/league competitions. The switch also probably made some Costa Ricans second-guess their approaches, but they all ended up kicking where Krul dove. All of his attempts were very close to saving the ball.
The whole goalkeeping coach squad planned this out, and Krul was seen warming up 5 minutes before he was going to be subbed in for penalties. He knew he was going to be put in, and he did a fantastic job.
It sounds like a tinfoil hat conspiracy, but it's not. Van Gaal only used two substitutes in 120 minutes, saving that last one for obvious reasons.

I did catch on to all of that, and I think Krul did a great job no worries there, but I just didn't expect it to begin with because I haven't been looking up stats/etc. Even the danish commentator was quite surprised during the short break.

This happened in some world cup game, I believe it was a quarter final or something. The goalkeeper had a list of everyone's most preferred penalty spot, accept for the 5th penalty kick taker. He would take the piece of paper out between each kick, and the 5th guy caught onto this. So he decided to change ways, and the goalkeeper didn't have his name written down. Sorry about it being confusing, but you get the general idea.
Found here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jens_Lehmann
"He made two critical saves of Argentinian penalty kicks, one from Roberto Ayala and another from Esteban Cambiasso. He managed to pick the right direction for all the penalties, and came close to saving a third. Meanwhile, the Germans made all 4 of the necessary penalties to win the penalty shoot-out 4–2. Lehmann's prowess in the shootout was aided by notes given to him before the kicks – an idea from Germany's chief scout, Swiss-born Urs Siegenthaler – with Lehmann keeping the paper in his right sock. Before the last shot from Cambiasso, Lehmann looked at the paper for a long time even though Cambiasso's name was not even on it. "

Re: The Football Lounge
i don't think argentina will be that big of a problem their last 3 matches were not that good and they depend way to much on messi. they shouldn't even have won against belgium. we should have won, but instead we played shitty, maybe stress because it was the first really big team we played against. also think our coach mad a critical error with some starting players.

Re: The Football Lounge
Agreed, Belgium played like absolute chit. But the very fact that Argentina continues to win should be enough to make it clear that they should be taken seriously, really wouldn't be too much of a surprise to see them reach the final

Re: The Football Lounge
Brazil doesn't know how to play without Neymar thats one of the reasons we lost. Luiz Felipe Scolari should'nt have put Fred in the game in the 1st place he's shit and one the 2nd half Paulinho stopped playing after he went to Tottenham, Fernandinho should have stayed in the game. GF us.
