Entry Deadline: April 14, 2014
FIRST PLACE: Kelly - 74.5/80
- Inhaps' critique - 37:
- Idea: 10/10
Technical: 9/10 - His web strands get cut off randomly. The soft glow on his arm is really nice. The background is a bit weird, though.
Typography: 9/10 - I cannot help but to feel that it lacks something.
Execution: 9/10
- Tuff Tiga's critique - 37.5:
- Idea: 10/10
Technical: 9.5/10 Only took off 0.5 here because you maybe could have blurred the edges or background slightly.
Typography: 9/10 I love script fonts when it comes to C4D sigs, maybe duplicate the 'Spiderman' text and colour with black and place it behind. It might have a good effect there
Execution: 9/10
SECOND PLACE and PUBLIC FAVOURITE: Stealth - 70.5/80
- Inhaps' critique - 35.5:
- Idea: 10/10
Technical: 8.5/10 - It suffers a bit from being too monochromatic, the left side loses contrast being really bright, which might not be the case if you allowed more colours. The added flames look really organic.
Typography: 8/10 - For the benefit of all, you should not have included the sotw bit.
Execution: 9/10
- Tuff Tiga's critique - 35:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 9/10 I don't really see anything wrong here. Everything works.
Typography: 8/10 The 'SOTW' part looks a bit disconnected from the rest. Maybe if you placed it a bit closer to the second line in your text and dropped the opacity a bit more it would be better.
Execution: 9/10
THIRD PLACE: Leakee- 60/80
- Inhaps' critique - 33:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 7/10 - The background texture is great but it does not have a synergy with the render when his body is all lit up and there is no explanation; it just looks odd.. The render is rather pixelated around the fingers and the belt.
Typography: 9/10 - It is solid but with so many E's it would be much better if you messed with each letter a bit for some variety.
Execution: 8/10
- Tuff Tiga's critique - 27:
- Idea: 9/10
Technical: 6/10 Your entire tag being the same colour doesn't help much here. It's completely plain ATM. You could have made it seem like light was coming from the bottom of the tag up and then you could have done something else.
Typography: 6/10 I suppose your text could work with your tag. I would have made it a bit smaller.
Execution: 6/10
Mr Rockeye - 58/80
- Inhaps' critique - 28:
- Idea: 8/10
Technical: 7/10 - Contrast is too high on Mario, too much white and not enough midtones on the fist. The face should not be darkened so much or the highlights do not look authentic. Not sure if the white outline around the hat is intentional but some improvement could be made by removing it so as to fit with the silky smooth outlines of the rest of the render. The background is somewhat lacking and the flames look somewhat awkward having been placed around randomly; you could use a pattern of some sort to remove the pitch black.
Typography: 6/10 - The text feels much too small and would rather be better on the right side to fill the void somewhat.
Execution: 7/10
- Tuff Tiga's critique - 30:
- Idea: 10/10 Mario is probably one of the most known character related to gaming. Thank god you didn't put it down the center.
Technical: 6/10 This is where you need to work the most on. You have some lighting present from the flame on his finger but other than that, the background is really plain which provides no depth at all. I see you attempted at making your signature flow, but there still a lot more that you could do with that.
Typography: 7/10 I did like your text here, the line at the left hand side especially. Though your composition could be better. Placing your text on that side of Mario doesn't really fit much with the rest of the tag. Next time try on the right hand side and don't be afraid to make it overlap with your focus (just a bit).
Execution: 7/10 I hate seeing white edges around Mario's Hat as that just kills it for me. Work on getting a larger image of your render so that doesn't happen in the future.
DoYouPlay_RS - 55/80
- Inhaps' critique - 26:
- Idea: 7/10
Technical: 7/10 - Perhaps it was not the best idea sticking something in front of her open palm. It removes a lot of depth. Both of her arms are difficult to identify without looking at the original render, in fact. Maybe it would have been a better decision to disregard her left arm entirely and make the render a bit bigger and maybe rotate it to be able to fit more of her on the canvas.
Typography: 5/10 - Colours match the rest but it lacks the gentle transition between blue and purple. Could have added a pink glow behind the lot, one just like the render has. Was the upper part of SIVIR supposed to be pure white? There does not seem a reason for it. As a whole, the text is a pain to look at. Aim to imitate the style of the render better and perhaps stick to less fonts; the same style might not suit all.
Execution: 7/10
- Tuff Tiga's critique - 29:
- Idea: 9/10 I've subtracted a point here because if no one has played league before, they wouldn't know who Sivir is.
Technical: 7/10 I do see some attempt at trying to make your tag flow well, try improving a bit more on this. I'm guessing you were trying to make it seem like an explosion?
Typography: 6/10 You really need to work on that text there, I'm not sure that the font works well at all with your tag.
Execution: 7/10
sphisticated - 47/80
- Inhaps' critique - 19:
- Idea: 8/10
Technical: 4/10 - I cannot give much when just about the only change is the background and not exactly for the better, to be honest.
Typography: 3/10 - Weakest part for sure. Very plain and that does not work here. One bit of advice, try not to have dark text on a dark background and light text on a light background like you have done here; it really hurt legibility.
Execution: 4/10
- Tuff Tiga's critique - 28:
- Idea: 9/10 Same point with DYP. See his post.
Technical: 5/10 All I see is some attempt at lighting. Your signature is completely flat at the moment. Trying making your background something that would help make your piece a bit more 3D.
Typography: 7/10 On vertical tags text placement is harder than on horizontal tags. That being said you still could improve on your text a lot. If you need help, look on DA for vertical tags and see how they place and design their text.
Execution: 7/10

Oops forgot to actually say something.
Yeah I haven't done any graphic design in a long time, but I used to really be in to it.
Looking forward to coming back to it
Yes, I am very rusty :p

I like kellys background.
I like the details in stealth sig.
I voted for Rockeye because it is the only one that is appealing to me.
The theme is videogames and it is the only of all of them that has a meaning for me with that theme and the work is well done.
Great submissions.

It has been nearly 10 days since this has gone up for voting and not even a word about the current status of this has been mentioned. You wonder why the design section is dead yet refuse to update the competitions, which are the main source of the activity in this section. I can understand if voting is taking a while, but at least an update would be more than helpful.

Forgive me. The SOTW schedule I settled on was to reveal the winners on Monday before posting the next one. Actual critique does not take much time. I have been overworked and fell ill on Sunday and SM/graphics have not been on my mind since.
