Teaching by Example: Phileep 15m Bank Merching
In my opinion, my most impressive feat (if any of them are to be considered impressive, that is) is building up my newbie account from 15m bank + 1 bond to an account worth nearly 1b today (6 months later) through pure flipping. I realize now that I missed out on the ability to teach newbies to flipping through my experience. So now, through a bit of long-term f2p merching on my third account, I've reached a wealth of just about 15m (15250k cash + 11 sara plateskirts which alch for 40k ea) and have membership that will last for 14 days until I need to buy another bond. I've decided to document this account's eventual rise or fall. It will be in the style of merching diaries, I suppose, with explanations and the like. So... the clock is ticking. I'd better get started!
Also note: I jump around from present, to past, to past perfect tenses all of the time. If this bothers you, I'm sorry, it bothers me too ... it bothers me too ...

- Spoiler:
I start off by pcing what is by far my favorite low wealth item, Ahrim's robe skirt. And I find ... a beautiful margin 850k-1100k. I was down 250k just from pcing that, so I hoped they would buy and sell without any trouble.
I also threw in an offer for some mist runes (have never really had any success with the item, it just came to me out of thin air). The margin was 300-500, decent enough I suppose, but multi-element runes are very slow and swing quite a bit so I was wary and only offered to buy 10k.
I wanted to get in at least one nex and ss item too, so I went with the only one I could afford, spectral ss. Pc was <5, but I saw it had just come off being 4~ in the past few days and figured I could snag it fairly low. I went with 4332k (leaving me with 2 gp in the pouch).- Spoiler:
At this point 4k mist runes had bought and I decided to cancel that offer, having a slight bit of buyer's regret. The spectral offer remained unfilled even as I moved into nighttime, but I figured I'd leave it in, having no better ideas for the use of 4m.
Just before bed, here is how my offers looked:- Spoiler:
4/21
- Spoiler:
- Today ended up being a decent day, but not a great one. Although its lack of greatness was my own fault; I wasn't particularly dedicated to flipping today. Nonetheless ...
Overnight that Spectral finally bought. And when I got the nex and ss pc I was pleased to see it at 5~ (a rise from <5). I threw it in for 5222k and waited. Overnight I also decided to try some pop armor flipping. This was way better back in the day, but I decided to give it a shot anyway because of the low amount of capital required. I chose Death lotus hood which had a margin of 150k. It was a lousy margin, yes, but I had already invested a few hundred k in pcing pop stuff so I settled for this.
The spectral didn't sell for 5222k and the price reverted to <5. I ended up selling just a touch under 5m. You'll also note that I still have to sell 2 death lotus hoods. I'm hoping they sell before I go to bed so I can make better use of that money. If they don't sell, I might just instant sell them for break even. Here is the end result of the day before preparing overnight offers.- Spoiler:
Edit: The two hoods did nis (non-instant sell) before bed.
4/22
- Spoiler:
- I did tested out a lot of different items on this day and here are my findings.
Overnight:
A decided to throw most of my capital into black ele legs because they're a very high profit overnight flip and don't require too much capital to do either. Well obviously I've now made it sound like Black ele legs are the perfect overnight item, and that's not completely true. They are just an overnight that has pretty nice margins more consistently than other overnights. I'm also highly familiar with the value of them, so that was another factor in me choosing them. You have to try out new items and keep taking different opportunities (variety is the spice of life), but that said if what you know is working there's no reason not to go with it. Note the 1 pair that has already sold bought before bed and I sold it overnight (I have plenty of slots). So that put me at break even on those already, which was good (a 400k expense to find the margin is pretty high at my wealth level). A Spectral also bought.- Spoiler:
So after that I progressed into my semi-activing period, which is where most of the aforementioned item testing took place. Below you'll see a Ganodermic Leg flip that went very well for me, 900k profit and it was actually quite painless (no adjusting of margins or the like).- Spoiler:
Here you'll see a large amount of Black ele legs selling ... I turned about 1.2m profit on these. Quite nice, but as I said, I anticipated making at least that much. So I wasn't necessarily pleased ... but was far from disappointed.- Spoiler:
Here is me dumping that spectral whose price dropped to <4 (from <5) after I bought it. It sucks, but I didn't have much choice. -350k.- Spoiler:
Did a bit more flipping towards the end that I didn't entirely capture, ahrim's books and crystal bows. Made minor profits on them, but nothing to jump up and down about. I don't need to elaborate much, because they weren't particularly effective or inspired. Let me also note that the accursed mist runes are finally gone!- Spoiler:
4/23
- Spoiler:
- Because spectral "crashed" (the price change was small, but the % change was huge, really) I decide to lowball one overnight, and that filled. Also, bought a few more black ele legs, but none really sold. No big deal, I've found black ele really buy and sell in bursts, i.e. I'll buy easily one day, and sell easily on a different day. I'm pretty sure it's coincidental, but *shrugs* . Sold some of the crystal bows from the previous day for a few hundred k total profit. Originally I was hoping they would be quick to buy and sell, but I'm afraid they weren't. A bust, more or less.
- Spoiler:
Later in the day that spectral sold for a nice 750k. Makes up for the crappy spectral from the previous day, and more. On a less positive note, the black ele legs hadn't moved at all (besides buying one more that I would have to sell). Nonetheless I had the fullest faith that the legs would sell, 1-1.5m is pretty standard for the legs, and I flip them a lot, as I said before.- Spoiler:
We now had some movement from the black ele legs, which is good. The extra 3m freed up will help, surely. Also flipped some off-hand d claws, since I found up until this point in the challenge, they had been consistently decent, if not a true hero. Also, the crystal bows sold for almost naught in profit. So long as the black ele legs would sell well over night, this would be quite a good day. Let me also note the fact that I sold 2 of the legs already for my goal price was greatly important; it convinced me that that was the correct price to sell for overnight. Had I not sold those 2, I might have considered selling lower, or rechecking the margin again, and both of those could prove costly. The indicator was of great help to me.
4/24
- Spoiler:
For the overnight session on this day (or technically the previous day ... depends on which way you look at it I guess) I chose to make my primary items the black ele legs, and also black cavaliers. I found a decent margin on them, but to be quite honest my expectations were fairly low. I figured I would probably be overcut through the night and would only buy maybe 5 of them. That would have netted about 700k profit, which would have been okay, but not exactly ambitious.- Spoiler:
The results were in ... black cavs were going pretty well actually, but I was still pretty skeptical. I figured something like "Well I guess now the trouble will come with selling them". Worse was that black ele legs were being pretty bad ... no buys or sells for the most part. At least from that I knew that they weren't crashing. Thus, I remained hesitantly optimistic with the legs and kept the prices the same.- Spoiler:
Here I went and did some semi-active flipping with big success. Verac's pieces had sold very high, and I made almost a mil from semi-activing them. The reasons behind flipping them were basically something along the lines of "Well, the sets work well, so why not try the pieces?" . Truthfully, the old staples of mine verac and torag armor sets were being pretty bad at the time, but I figured working with the individual pieces could still work. Ganodermics I threw in as an afterthought. Their margin wasn't too great (something like 65k) but I saw they were fast movers when I flipped them last time, so I figured it could still be worth it.- Spoiler:
You may notice right away that Ganodermic legs sold, but much better was that all of the black ele legs sold within just a few hours. I said, for no reason that I can see they tend to work in bursts like that. Perhaps I was just undercut by another fairly large flip, hard to say. Regardless, I was pleased with that. Black cavs weren't selling well, but I had bought two more, and with a bigger flip comes bigger profits, provided of course you can maintain the same margins. I was relatively distracted so I just left the black cavs in without micromanaging.- Spoiler:
This is what I walked into not long later ... in the end the black cavaliers worked out splendidly, even though there margin wasn't all that high. I made roughly 1m on them, and they were essentially effortless. The treach wands that I tried didn't do anything, but I didn't mind much. With a bunch of capital, and a new idea on flipping verac and torag set pieces I set up my overnights and went to dreamland...
4/25
- Spoiler:
- I didn't do very much flipping at all on 4/25. I finished selling the black cavs in the overnight period, bought some stat platelegs, and optimistically put in offers for many veracs plateskirts (I was essentially trying to recreate that epic flip I had had the previous day with them but on an even larger scale). Ultimately I did not profit at all from them ... it was worth a shot, I suppose. This day was essentially a transition day; I sold items I was selling from before, and bought items that I wouldn't sell until the following day ... and as I said even these slow flips were not profitable.
- Spoiler:
4/26
- Spoiler:
- Here's the proof that the verac's pieces are a complete bust, I actually lost about 100k from flipping them. Also, I flipped some statius legs with decent success I suppose. V boots additionally bought, but would not be sold until the next day. I was still on a minor break from the rs scene so this was about all I did on the newbie for the day.
- Spoiler:
4/27
- Spoiler:
- V boots from the previous day sold for minor profits, about the bare minimum on a nex and ss flip for it to be considered successful (~700k). Also on this day I managed to find some nice Ahrim's skirt margins again chose to flip them.
- Spoiler:
In the end, Ahrim's skirts went pretty well because I managed to flip roughly one limit with 150k margins. More surprising was that I was able to pull off 100k+ margins on gano leggings again for nearly a limit. Overall it was a pretty nice day, which I desperately needed after my weak performances on the past few days.- Spoiler:
4/28
- Spoiler:
- This worked out to be the first day I worked to flip primarily nex and ss ... and honestly ... it didn't go so well. Below you'll see me buying some v boots which I end up breaking even on ... and dragon dust also, an item which I have never flipped before actually. Although I have flipped the dragon scales from which the dust comes once, and again I've found that in my experiences, few though they were, this item turns out to be more trouble than it's worth. I made 400k on the dragon scale dust, and the flip went about as well as I could have reasonably expected it to have gone. Anyways the trouble with the item is that it's too tough to buy and sell bulk ... and yet the margins are so small they prevent anything but true bulk flipping being worth the while. I've digressed ... my point is they didn't really do much for me here and that I don't recommend them as a good flipping item.
It was also on this day that I decided to break out one of my all-time favorites, the white elegant skirt. Now, the white elegant skirt does come with its fair share of problems- namely that it's slow to buy and sell and that it tends to buy almost twice as frequently as it can sell meaning that often times you become stuck with many of them that you'll have to waste lots of time on selling. That said though, few items consistently can buy for 150k and sell for over 400k, so they're a very nice item for a select audience but perhaps not good for the general population of flippers.- Spoiler:
Later in the day you'll see that I ended up buying several more b/g (boots/gloves), but unfortunately I have absolutely no records of selling them... I think I profited just a little bit on two, and broke even on the others two leaving me +1m at best from the g/b. You'll also see a nice amount of progress on the white skirts, which I was reasonably pleased to find.- Spoiler:
My wealth: 37.3m
4/29
- Spoiler:
- For the historical record (as I hope this will be viewed at times in the future as well) let me note that right around this time pvm gears across the board were crashing fairly hard. From about 4-29 until 5-2 Virtus pieces were around their lowest points ever, and the panic was very much a real thing. Needless to say, margins were very good. Though the panic was in somewhat full swing for the previous few days this is the first day that I really picked up on it ... and when I recognized it ... carpe diem!
Now my overnight period was pretty lousy and not very efficient to put it gently. While I was chatting in flipping-mentors with rp and Billious I threw in this Arcane for ~2.5m under the stated high price and to be great surprise it bought after only about 1 hour. There isn't much else to say about this - more grandiose spectral flips that would never come true, and the continuation of the white ele skirts is barely worthy of note.- Spoiler:
Sold the arcane for almost 1.4m profit ... it wasn't worth the time/capital needed to try and highball it even more seeing as the graphs indicated it was going to crash pretty hard anyway.- Spoiler:
Here I made a good trend read actually. It's rare that I compliment myself, even jokingly, so this may be important. Anyways, I saw Virtus was going down in value at a pretty rapid rate and saw the pc on top/bottom was 16-17 (or the equivalent). I threw in my offers at 15.5, hoping that I could snag them for below the listed value and then sell them hopefully towards the high side of the listed value ... but even if I had to compromise for selling 16.5 (half way in between the listed nex and ss range) I would make 1m/robe. Obviously, there is nothing special about seeing that it's ideal to buy something for as low as possible... the key was that at this time it was actually possible to get these kinds of margins, and I recognized that correctly. You must remember that no matter how good of a merchant you are sometimes the economy will simply not let you do certain things. If items are stable, their margins will often be lousy, that's a fair generalization. So when these types of opportunities arise, you'd best take advantages of them. Carpe Diem, seize the day! Also you'll see on the side I sold a arm helm for about 500k profit, which was very nice considering how junky pc 101 items often are margin-wise.- Spoiler:
In the end, I settled on taking just under 1m profit on each of the vlegs. I would've liked to see if I could have sold at maybe 16.7 undercut, and take an extra 400k profit, but in the end it wasn't worth it because nighttime was fast approaching and I was not going to hold virtus pieces overnight. It was a fair compromise, in my opinion, to lose out on the 400k but have an extra 34m (i.e. almost my entire bank) available for overnight merchanting.- Spoiler:
4/30
- Spoiler:
- Based off of the success of the previous day, I decided I'd continue working with Nex and ss items. I was particularly interested in Virtus, as I recognized its big crash (later would prove to be a big dip) as an opportunity for huge flips.
Below is a 1m flip on a single virtus item, which is pretty rare in normal circumstances, but was achieved without much difficulty here.- Spoiler:
I did the same with v legs here with ease.- Spoiler:
It was overall a pretty average day in terms of profits, but would prepare me for some major nex and ss flipping on the following day.
5/1
- Spoiler:
- Here is what I attempted as overnight offers here.
- Spoiler:
A standard arcane overnight offer is what I threw in, looking for maybe 1-2m profit. And it filled, and I was fairly pleased. But I was more pleased about seeing these major v glove lowballs fill actually. Well, tbh, I was concerned at first, until I saw the pc, at which point I found it safe to smile. Also you'll see some standard white ele skirt flips, and Ahrim's hoods. The Ahrim's hoods I attempted as a minor adjustment to my usual barrows flipping and I hoped to maybe make 50k each and buy 20+. Unfortunately, it just turned out as a bust. Oh well. Win some, lose some. And you'll also see the Armadyl helmets (from the previous day) failing to sell.
The arcane sold quite quickly, so perhaps I sold it a little bit too low, but then again I also freed up that 16m for use again. And with 1m profit on such a crappy item, you can't really be so upset.- Spoiler:
Here the virtus gloves sold for about 1.2m each, giving me a 2.4m profit with very little money down. A triumph, really. Again, though, these weren't normal economic conditions- virtus was crashing hard and I made some nice lowballs. That's all. You'll also see I sold the Armadyl helms. The profit was small, maybe only 250k each, but it was fairly effortless. With flipping the nex items I was using a lot of money per slot, so I didn't mind the lost slot too much.- Spoiler:
More of the same virtus lowballs. This time I did virtus helms, and made about 1m each, or 2m in total. Because my bank was so small I could only really flip one at a time, but I still managed to complete the flips pretty well. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn't put so much wealth into just one or two slots that you have to settle for only offering for 1/2 the limit at once like I did ... but again in extreme circumstances I'm allowed some leeway.- Spoiler:
5/2
- Spoiler:
- I started off with some p gloves here. I only got about 650k, which I consider the minimum that makes them worth bothering with. But, I suppose, since they're much cheaper than they once were, 650k is a pretty decent margin after all. Anyways, that's what I got.
- Spoiler:
Then I did some more virtus set (piece) flipping. The price had rebounded a little bit, but was still on the low side and things were still in a semi-panic mode. I ended up making about 750k ea on two pieces, which isn't ideal, but is really quite good. It's just lovely when you can nex and ss flip, or 90weaps flip for big margins, it's just easier to not have to price check things. Yes, I'm lazy to a fault, just look at the frequency of my updates.- Spoiler:
5/3
- Spoiler:
- I think I could go on forever about how lovely Ahrim's skirts can be... but I'll spare you that. Suffice it to say that I love when they inexplicably have no bottom end to their margin. It allows me to get crazy 250k margins on them, as you'll see below. Remember, you should get to know your items ... if an item has no real bottom end to the margin, it raises a big red flag. It could indicated some sort of imminent crash, or just signal that you way overpaid for your instant buy. But because I knew the standard prices of the item, and how it tends to work in general, I was able to confidently make that lowball.
- Spoiler:
- Spoiler:
Afterwards my v glove offer filled, and I threw in an ohm offer (my first drygore, I believe) and it filled pretty quickly/easily too. The panic of weapons/armor extended beyond virtus, and I knew that, which is why I was willing to try for a 1m+ ohm flip which under normal circumstances would be basically impossible.- Spoiler:
And below you'll see that both items panned out for me, yielding roughly 2m profit between the two of them. I was pleased.- Spoiler:
5/4
- Spoiler:
- On this day the nex and ss surge died down quite a bit. Most of the day was spent with nex and ss offers sitting in the ge, utterly unfilled. There was no reason to deviate from flipping nex and ss, seeing as it had given me my most successful days ever on the account. I knew the excellent margins wouldn't last forever, but I intended to work with them as much as I could. I also tried for a vengeful, mainly because it was cheap and it had a decent amount of potential. I really don't flip 90 shields at all, so I didn't know how it'd turn out, but I figured it was at least worth a try. The only semi-successful flip I have recorded was an overnight flip of some zammy spears. I ended up making about 400k off of 10 of them, which is utterly pathetic. What's ironic is that they would nearly triple in price just a few days after I flipped them. Bummer, eh?
- Spoiler:
What's actually important from this day is that I had to buy another bond. It was my second bond, counting the bond I bought to start up the account, or the first bond if you don't count that. Anyways, I anticipated the 6m investment would be worth it .- Spoiler:

You should try and apply for flipping mentor as well as making such diarys, since you do have 1b profit and would like to help new comers I say go for it.
But im looking forward to seeing the progression in the newbie account!

Phileep just a suggestion why not calculate daily profits? easy to keep track of progress that way.

I have not updated this log in several days, however I'm still flipping and recording what's going on with the account. I'll update this soon hopefully

Re: Teaching by Example: Phileep 15m Bank Merching
Added a few more days to the log which brings the most recent entry to 4/25. And now ... we are no longer lagging a week behind ... we are now lagging but a mere 6 days behind the present day. As requested, I will now give semi-periodic wealth updates on that account so you can actually see how much progress the account has made. Because all this logging is done with a delay, finding wealth without estimations is quite difficult, so I've opted to instead record my wealth on a certain day, but only reveal it once the log reaches that point. Then, afterwards, that wealth level will remain on the log as an indication of progress. The oldest wealth point I have recorded is for 4/29, so when that log is posted you'll know how much cashola I had at that point.
Summary: The log has been updated and wealth checks will now be given from time to time.

Re: Teaching by Example: Phileep 15m Bank Merching
Let me announce that it has been one month since I began this mini challenge/log and I've like to say that I think I've had great success. From 15m in one month I've managed to reach a wealth of over 104m, minus two bonds. Meaning my wealth would be 115.6m had I not bought any bonds, and thus I reached over 100m profit in this one month of work. As such, I will no longer be actively tracking this account's progress in this log. Why? Because this account is no longer the low-wealth flipping newbie that it was one month ago. If you guys would like to see more of this style, by me or anyone else, feel free to comment saying so. Also, if you want to rep + me... don't, because I'm so farking behind on the logging process =). If you want to rep + me once I finish... yeah you don't have to, because I don't do anything of the sort that requires reputation. Instead, rep + someone who has helped you out today.
Now I'm well aware I'm over twenty days behind on the actual logging, however I assure you I do have a vast stockpile of pictures which will allow me to tell my newbie's story with what should be the same quality as the entries I've already uploaded. If you are disappointed with the quality of the above... well then you're out of luck . But anyways I'll set the very obtainable goal of getting this log complete by the time summer vacations start here, the second week of June.
I will continue to work on the log in the style that I have up to this point, and will bump the log when I upload a sizable amount of content, probably a week +.
As far as concluding thoughts go ... I'll hold off until I finally do my homework and get this crap up-to-date.

Re: Teaching by Example: Phileep 15m Bank Merching
Let me announce that I've updated just under a week worth of progress tonight. So check it out if you're interested. Also check it out if you're disinterested. If you're uninterested, I guess you needn't take a look ... but in that case I doubt you would've read this whole post anyhow.
