First place & public favourite: todgott
Total: 94/120
- Broeder’s critique – 29.5:
- Idea: 7.5/10
Only one of the week to have made a real effort to create motion in the piece. The render is dynamic and the effects you created around the swords and render add to that in a good way.
Technical: 7.5/10
Depth is good enough, colours are complimentary and interesting. Flow is created but i feel the render as a focal point is lost in a sea of topaz.
Typography: 7/10
Its placement is a bit odd because it doesn’t match with any lines in that section. The font could have been cool if given more attention to show, the effects behind it make it blend more but I don’t think that’s a good thing in this particular case
Execution: 7.5/10
In the end the subtle blurring for depth, interesting effects and sense of motion make this a good piece. It’s just too bad you topaz blurred a lot of the background which doesn’t add depth but add out-of-place textures that shouldn’t really be there
- Josh Designs’ critique – 32.5:
- Idea: 8.5
The idea I’m guessing was to utilize fire and control it to make a good sig. And this is just red hot. Nice work.
Technical: 8.5
The flow is amazing. Everything flows with the swords except in a little bit of the background. Your depth is lacking a little bit. Your background just looks a little flat. And I don’t know if the topaz did that or what. But as far as the depth between the render and background goes you hit the money. Your lighting couldn't have been better aside from the random dark streak going to the top right of the sig. If you would work that out and add maybe a couple more darks the lighting would be perfect.
Typography: 7
Not bad. I do like the font and the simplicity of it. I dislike the yellow flame you put behind it to make it pop. There are other ways you could have made your type pop without doing that. But the positioning is great as well as the size.
Execution: 8.5
You really did great on this sig. I would put this in your top 10 or 15. The overall feel is inviting and pleasing to the eye. Oh and what’s up with the border? haha i donno if I like it or hate it yet.
- Tuff Tiga’s critique – 32:
- Idea: 8/10 I love where you have placed Katarina, works well in my eyes. Using the flames with the sword does show motion in my eyes. Great work!
Technical: 8/10 You should have made Katarina pop out more from the background. That would have worked a lot.
Typography: 8/10 I love your type, where you placed it as well as size of it. The only issue I have is the thing behind it.
Execution: 8/10 Overall I love your piece though I'm not digging the border you placed. Feels eh to me.
Second place: Do_You_Play_RS
Total: 79/120
- Broeder’s critique – 26.5:
- Idea: 6/10
Of course the sig has movement, but I wouldn’t see the theme of this sig as movement. As such i have given you a 6/10
Technical: 7/10
You didn’t make major errors, but I do feel that your work on creating the color composition was too intrusive on the render especially. Because of this it doesn’t look realistic and a bit noisy. More focus on depth and flow could have been very beneficial and i feel you made it too easy for yourself by just filling in the left side with such a dark section.
Typography: 7/10
It fits and doesn’t bring down the level of the signature. Sometimes less is more.
Execution: 6.5/10
In the end everything fits together but errors along the way have turned it into less than it could have been.
- Josh Designs’ critique – 26.5:
- Idea: 7.5
The concept is good. I love the idea of someone jumping out of a c4d explosion. (If that’s what you were going for)
Technical: 7.5/10
The flow is great. Everything looks real with the render. You also are showing some depth here. Not much, but it’s noticeable. And the lighting is kind of weird makes it seem as if she is under water. It’s another one of your two color sigs. Which makes this one seem weird because her face is blue now. And I don’t think it was originally blue. You just need to stop changing the color of things that are supposed to be a certain color. Like Skin. (IMO)
Typography: 4/10
I think you have gone 300 straight sigs with the same font. Look up some typography compositions. And just copy them over into your sig but make them your own. I’m always on IRC to help with typography if you need. You need to branch out. Unless you start working on something different for it, i really have trouble saying my opinion on it over and over.
Execution: 7.5/10
Overall it’s pretty good. We have been talking a little bit lately, and I’m seeing some improvement with the problems you are running into. I don’t see a lot of sharpness on this one, like the sig you showed me the other day. Except on the left side of the sig it gets a little crazy. The only problem i see on this sig is colors and typography. And you probably know that. Nice work though!
- Tuff Tiga’s critique – 26:
- Idea: 8/10
I can see some movement here and what you were going for.
Technical: 6/10
Your piece does have flow and depth but what it's lacking is lighting. This may be due to the fact that it's only one colour. Move out of your comfort zone and try something new. Looks rather bland.
Typography: 6/10
Just as Josh had said, it's always the same type over and over. On this piece it isn't that bad and it works, but in the future you should try something else.
Execution: 6/10
As I said above, try moving away from the one colour scheme. Your piece would have looked a lot better that way. It gets confusing near the bottom right + the left and right are COMPLETELY different. It would look better if there were similarities there.
Third place : Leakee
Total: 66.5/120
- Broeder’s critique – 21.5:
- Idea: 5/10
Pretty standard, a render in the middle of an ambiguous background. The render has movement implied but I don’t feel you make use of it in the way you could.
Technical: 5/10
No depth, no flow, weird lighting attempts and odd attempts and blending the render into the bg.
Typography: 6/10
Pretty standard as well; thing is it wouldn’t be as bad if it was just a bit smaller and was closer to the render.
Execution: 5.5/10
The background looks interesting and I wonder if you compiled it yourself or it’s a wallpaper. But the clashing colors around the render and the lack of a real focal point make this a not so interesting piece.
- Josh Designs’ critique – 23:
- Idea: 6
I don't know what you were going for here. I DO I DO I DO I DO love that your trying new things though KIO!
Technical: 5
In my opinion it lacks all flow, depth, and lighting. Your flow is absent. Where you could have a smudge or a c4d going with his punch. I don’t see any depth. It just looks really flat, and not well blended. And your lighting is off. It looks like your lighting is in his fists, and the side of the sig? When you add lights ( a realistic light source ) it will have darks. I don’t see any darks in this sig.
Typography: 6
Not bad. You’re trying new things with it so that’s good. Mess with color and font a little more. And you should have the two lines closer together. And closer to the render.
Execution: 6
It lacks the things i pointed out. Overall it's meh (as Inhaps would say). You can do better. But I’m telling you right now there’s nothing more i love then seeing a designer branch out from his norm. So keep that up. I just don't think this is one of your best.
- Tuff Tiga’s critique – 22:
- Idea: 6/10
I'm guessing that the motion is from his fist? Next time try playing him elsewhere besides the center.
Technical: 5/10
You need to decide where you want the lighting from. Just one spot, not 2 different.
Typography: 5/10
Place the text a bit more close to your focal. This isn't that bad but would be better that way.
Execution: 6/10
Improving on the points I made above will help your sig a lot more.

Re: SOTW #70 - WINNERS ANNOUNCED
As you all can see, we rebooted sotw 70. It didnt have any antries and while we, of course, didnt like that, we understand that we do these things for our user and that our users cant be as excited every week .
We changed the theme to something that i would see as a very challenging theme that leaves a lot of freedom to you, the artists.
We hope to see some entries this week, but of course life is life and always will be life and we will continue to host these as long as people want us to .
Also, sorry about the latest Sotw judging.. We use a very advanced coding/decoding system but the CIA intercepted some of our transmissions so we had to... do something about it.

I will gladly change my name to the one on this forum is necessary. Otherwise, this is the one for my dA account I think it has movement, but you can [literally] be the judge of that.

I'll have to extend this until next Friday due to lack of entries and, I believe, spring break that's around this time of year for many people.

Re: SOTW #70 - WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Sorry for the delay. My computer had to be sent in for repairs and I haven't had any way of contacting anyone. I still don't have it but I've recently bought a new phone, so I can at least try and sort this out but I don't know how much luck I'll have with that.
